Another frustrating afternoon at The Riverside.

Once again Middlesbrough proved the only consistency that we have in this squad of players is that they are inconsistent.

Once again I took my seat at The Riverside and once again it was a frustrating afternoon against Watford.

At times defensively we were like a pub team, you could have driven a bus through our two central defenders, once again there was a distinct lack of communication throughout the side and rank bad defending.
24 goals conceded in 15 games, the 4th worst defensive record in the championship, this about sums up our lack of defensive nous.

Playing 4 centre halves along the back line worked against Doncaster, but clearly didn’t work against a far superior team Watford.
I have said it for many years, playing square pegs in round holes is not the answer. It is an indication how much Venus rates Friend, Halliday and Richardson, who all found themselves on the bench, and its an indication of just how desperate we are.
We continue to wait for a newly appointed manager and as I mentioned last week, the quicker we appoint him the better it is for everyone. We now have the International break and I’m hoping we employ the right man and rope in a couple of loan signings that we desperately need.

I heard rumours or speculation that Jutkiewicz was going on loan to Blackburn Rovers, if the rumours are true what would be the benefits in that?We have already brought in Ayala, sent Hoyte out on loan. Surely there should be no movement in or out until the new manager is employed, or is this the ploy?
There is also talk about us employing a director of football, we can only hope and pray that he is better than Joe Kinnear and that he doesn’t override or undermine the manager.

Going back to Saturday I was surprised to see Kei Kamara handed the arm band, that’s the third time this season, Williams and Leadbitter the other two. I thought a captain was a stalwart, a leader, a communicator . Personally I wasn’t in agreeance with any of the trio mentioned.

As it stands at this minute our main focus should be on our league position, we are 16th place and in desperate need of new faces and points on the board. In my humble opinion we need 2 fullbacks, a creative central midfielder who will chip in with his fair share of goals and a fox in the box type centre forward.

Interesting to see that Karanka is top of the list for the managers job in the bookies, no doubt Peter Kenyons connections with Middlesbrough could play a part in the negotiations.

I’m glad to be back on the radio with The Three Legends alongside Dickie Ord and Malcolm Macdonald.
