Thoughts on the England USA game.

Before Englands game against USA I predicted a draw.

What I didn’t predict was a howler from Robert Green.

Scottish goalkepers have been critised and laughed at,now the joke is on England.

Remember back in 2002 World Cup Final when David Seaman got chipped by Brazils Ronaldinio from 2 miles, it could have been 3 miles!

Remember in 2008 the European qualifier when Croatias Niko Kranjcars shot squirmed past Scott Carson.

There has been others but Robert Greens gaff beats them all,he could have thrown his cap on it, a blind man could have  saved it.You expect that kind of clanger when watching your local pub team on a Sunday.

The USA were  everything I expected, organised, disciplined and focussed.

Pick of the Engalnd side for me was Steven Gerrard, he led by example, grabbed the opener with a teriffic finish and put in several good challenges.

Glen Johnson attempted to get forward at every opportunity and put in some lovely crosses.

Emile Heskey led the line brilliantly ,won the ball in the air , his link up play was good , he laid Gerrards goal on a plate, and he should have scored.

Biggest disappointments were Ashley Cole, failed to influence the game the way he does at club level, very seldom went forward, having Millner  then Wright  Phillips in front of him didn’t help.

Lampard failed to dictate play , he was anonymous most of the game.

Rooney never got a kick in the first half of the game. In his defence he didn’t get enough of the ball. The longer the game went on he got deeper.

Overall I thought a draw was a fair result.

Next up Algeria, can England beat them? Of course they can, but the big guns must perform.

The big Question is will Green start, I reckon he will.

What do you think…….

  1. I have to admit i was really surprised with the inclusion of 3 players, Milner, Green and Heskey. Green is third choice in my eyes and was not a patch on Hart in the warm up games therefor blame goes on Capello for that one. Milner has been ill with a virus and although on his day he’s a class act you cannot play a man who has just got off his sickbed to play to his best, blame once again goes on Capello. He did get the Heskey selection right , and i hold my hands up and have to say well done because he was one of Englands best. Well done Capello i suppose 1 out of 3 ain’t bad!!!!

one part of me hopes he’s not dropped as he’ll be destroyed and that will be it for his international career…. however another part of me wants the experience of James in goal behind our already makeshift defence!!

spot on Gerrard, Johnson and Heskey were our best players

We should beat Algeria, but the sooner Rooney and Lampard score the better..

It would have been better if Adam Johnson or Downing where there to come on for Millner (who in my opinion shouldn’t of started) however Capello dropped the ball there!!

No room for setiment on this one. Capello needs to make a strong decision for the benefit of the team and I believe he should never have started with Green for the tournament anyway, so really, David James should be drafted back in and pencilled in as the number One.

Joe Cole needs to return to the left and I would bring in Crouch for Heskey. Crouch offers so much more and has an eye for goal even when he isnt playing particularly well. That is a good trait to have as a striker. Heskey is very much a confidence player but he never socres enough goals for me to see him gain confidence!

Lampard and Gerrard would be the central pairing in midfield. If they cant play together and deliver disciplined performances then what I think is true – they are overrated at international level and premiership football is too easy for them because the quality of opposition everyweek isnt exactly spectacular. They are both very good players tho and should be able to cope with the limited threat from Algeria.

They key for me is Joe Cole, who is a terrific player and can adapt to any location on the pitch. His intelligence sees him through games quite effectively and his linke up play with the front pairing could be pivotal.

People are completely going overboard about this game. USA are not as bad of a team as people make out especially Mickey Horswill(how do you put up with him Bernie)

The only mistake I can see is the playing of Milner and then not bringing Cole on.

People are in for a shock when we play Algeria, when England dont batter them. They will put 10 men behind the ball. A Holding midfielder certainly wont be needed, maybe not even 4 in defence,

    Dawson Terry Upson
    Johnson Gerrard Lampard Cole Cole
    Rooney Crouch.
