Chesterfield v Middlesbrough, Carling Cup round one

Tonight Middllesbrough  look to progress in the Carling Cup against Chesterfield, and after Saturdays nightmare start its important to get back on the rails.

McManus, Thomson, Robson and Boyd, who all started against Ipswich, will be missing as they are on international duty as is Tarmo Kink.

Every season I hear this talk ” Oh the Carling Cup doesn’t matter, if we get knocked out we can concentrate on promotion.” What a load of old tosh.

As a professional you want to win every game. Cup games give strikers more opportunity to boost their tally against lower division teams and winning breeds confidence.

To get knocked out tonight would be disastrous.

I’m intrigued to see what Strachans starting eleven is going to be and who plays where.

Chesterfield won their first league game of the season against Barnet on Saturday beating them 2-1.

Five summer signings made their debuts. My old team mate John Sheridan is Chesterfields manager and for those who don’t know they are a league two side.

It’s a golden opportunity to progress in the competition.

Don’t forget you can watch the game live on Sky and afterwards I will be doing a podcast.
